follow the white rabbit
29 June 2006
follow the white rabbit
center stage –
the audience politely applauds,
(well, at least some of them).
I remove my top hat,
show them it is empty
inside, and just to convince
them, collapse it flat.
Then, with a loud POP,
I snap it back into form.
(one or two applaud sarcastically).
I set the hat on the stage and
with a flourish of my hand,
a magic wand appears,
(no one applauds).
“Ladies and gentlemen …”
Blah, blah, blah … white
rabbit out of my hat …
Snare drum roll,
wave the magic wand,
say a few magic words,
AND … nothing!
(those same two applaud once again)
Behind me,
an adorable white rabbit hops
across the stage,
right up to me and the top hat.
It pauses,
looks up at me or out at them,
and hops into the hat
and disappears.
I follow.
(Everyone applauds!)
Futility 3
28 June 2006
Futility 3
and on the next day
“maybe it is for the best”
a window opened
but is it too late?
freedom costs everything.
— a different death.
Reprieve (2)
27 June 2006
Reprieve (2)
no rain. (yet)
forceful winds drive the clouds,
cattle-like,
across a rapidly changing sky.
elm and sycamore
reveal a paler side in warning;
in agreement,
wildlife shelters from the scented storm.
But then,
like a gentle sigh of contentment,
the sun
and for a moment I can smile.
Futility 2
27 June 2006
Futility 2
on the day after,
death litters the windowsill,
just as expected.
Inside, still I gaze
at life streaming by outside,
saddened by windows.
Futility 1
26 June 2006
Futility I
bugs inside, looking
out at what cannot be reached,
die trying to live.
Inside, I too look
out through eyes reaching further
than living to die.
darkness hides my eyes
22 June 2006
darkness hides my eyes.
For now a window is closed.
No one sees my soul.
lightning bugs mingle
22 June 2006
lightning bugs mingle
within the darkest shadows
hoping to attract.
new hatchling swallows
22 June 2006
new hatchling swallows,
left to tremble through the storm
conquer one more fear.
fishing for my thoughts
22 June 2006
fishing for my thoughts –
cast into the river
and wait for a nibble.
