The War Within
"To be nobody but yourself in a world that’s doing its best to make you somebody else, is to fight the hardest battle you are ever going to fight. Never stop fighting." (e.e. cummings)
I like to think my struggles are unique,
As if no one else endures what I do.
It’s a martyr’s validation technique,
A defensive mechanism I use.
Misery may love company, it’s true,
And we all need someone who understands,
But pessimism is a deep, dark pool,
Almost inescapable, like quicksand.
My conscience often tries to reprimand,
To remind me my attitude’s a choice,
Each moment of life has its own demands.
It’s up to me to filter out the noise.
Change is often easier said than done,
But I’ll fight the fight, some battles are won.
