Purple's Platitudes

nothing but words …

Sonnet XXII

Sonnet XXII

If you never wanted to leave, I’d say,

until my very last breath I’d love you.

We should have tried to figure out a way,

to overcome what stood between us two.

Instead we let go, and tried to forget,

something two people rarely ever find,

I’ve never been one to live with regret,

losing you comes closest to that sometimes.

But we cannot change the past we once knew,

or the future which proves it is over,

I love you even more now, it is true,

but as more than your friend, not your lover.

I know you can feel what I cannot say,

where our words fail, our hearts will find a way.
