Purple's Platitudes

nothing but words …

blanket interruptus

blanket interruptus

Saturday night, at the drive-in cinema,

two blankets, one beneath to insulate

us against the gathering dew, and

one above, to insulate us from the

less successful and bored.

Despite the cumbersome cuddling,

I don’t remember the movie that was

playing, but I will never forget that

ear-piercing falsetto scream that could

have shamed any opera singer.

Oh, don’t get the wrong idea, it

wasn’t my fault. Some youngster

appeared out of nowhere,

not so innocently lifted the blanket,

then showed me a bunch of coins

he clutched in one hand and

silently pointed towards an indefinite,

but clearly understood blame — he was

paid to disturb us.

It cost me a whole two dollars

to get him to go away. The blanket

never did warm up again.
