Riding the brakes, I followed the narrow dirt road, ever deeper into the woods.

As the road narrowed, branches and brush scraped the car on both sides and the

trees loomed above, but almost lovingly, not menacing. As I came around

a small curve, a fallen white birch tree marked the end of the road. I

proceeded on foot, although there wasn’t a clear, discernible path to follow.

I walked for an hour, by instinct, giving little thought to finding my way back

to the car. And then I saw it through a window in the dense trees, a beacon

drawing me towards itself.

 

Newly discovered,

golden sun, setting on pond –

I knew I’d arrived.
