Purple's Platitudes

nothing but words …

thistle

09 February 2014

Trust’s like a purple thistle.

When in bloom it is beautiful to behold.

But, held too tight, its bristles

are painful little missiles

and only time can heal the damage I’m told.

afterthought

09 February 2014

Even after all these years,

with my eyes closed, I still see you with my heart.

And it’s never been so clear,

I still wish that you were here,

living life together, rather than apart.

trainwreck

09 February 2014

It’s like taking the last train

to someplace that you have never been before,

there is no way back again,

there is no one left to blame,

since the Bridge Out Up Ahead sign is ignored.

I Dr Humor

19 August 2013

I Dr Humor

I can only see the "E"

the largest letter on the very top line

although once, to be funny

I entirely memorized

the whole eye chart, pretended I could see fine.

Invocation

18 March 2013

Invocation

You invoke my secret name,

and then act surprised when I choose to appear.

Perhaps you are not to blame,

to you this is just a game,

but the consequences must be paid my dear!

Unenlightened

02 December 2009

Unenlightened

Walked into a darkened room,

flipped the switch – does all happen, just as it should?

No light enlightens. This tomb

I stumble through, my dark wood.

A journeying soul, steps beyond where I stood.

Just call me Phil

01 December 2009

Just call me Phil

‘Tis the season, bah humbug!

Christmas music blaring ev’rywhere I go,

makes me wish I could unplug

or hope for nine feet of snow

and hibernate until Groundhog Day’s shadow!

Evergreen

01 December 2009

Evergreen

I was taller than this tree

when grandpa and I planted it in his yard.

Now it towers above me,

bearing witness to the memories and scars

that prove growing can be hard.

Rock Tumbler

29 November 2009

Rock Tumbler

it’s not that I would want to

show anything but a fully polished gem,

but old rocks can become new

if we keep the end in view

and let the process smooth the edges again.
